The Accounting Standards Board ( Iasb ) And The...
Since 2007, both the Financial Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have been collaborating on a unified project pertaining to the creation of a new accounting standard for insurance contracts. Currently, no international accounting standard exists under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), as they tend to follow the guidance of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). However, the standards proposed by both boards differ slightly. In June 2013, the FASB issued an Exposure Draft, Proposed Accounting Standards Update: Insurance Contracts (Topic 834) that strayed slightly from the IASBââ¬â¢s Exposure Draft Insurance Contracts also issued in June 2013. Initially, the FASB introduced a model with a scope including not only insurance entities but also noninsurance entities that issued insurance contracts. Nevertheless, the FASBââ¬â¢s goals in the alternation of insurance accounting have diverged fur ther from its initial convergence efforts with the IASB after the FASB voted in a board meeting on February 19, 2014, to narrow the focus of the insurance contracts project to pertaining solely to insurance entities, which is the same scope as current U.S. GAAP. The FASB was pressured by insurance entities, professional accounting organizations, and other financial statement users to reduce the scope of its exposure draft on insurance accounting or to specify which entities would fall under the control of theShow MoreRelatedProjects: Insurance Contracts and Revenue Recognition1606 Words à |à 7 Pagesproject Insurance contracts Q2. A Culture Of Perfection Media s Influence On Adolescents
Rachel Uhland Professor Joshua Fleming English 101 5 July 2015 A Culture of Perfection: Mediaââ¬â¢s Influence on Adolescents Comparison. It is one of the most dangerous and detrimental habits within our society. We fall into a routine of ââ¬Å"self-checkingâ⬠ourselves against others; mentally taking notes of what we can improve and what we are doing better. We all know that comparison often takes itsââ¬â¢ toll on our confidence and self-worth; what we may not realize, however, is how early these destructive habits begin and why. The mediaââ¬â¢s influence is everywhere and itsââ¬â¢ messages are instilled in us from a very young age. The body images promoted by the media implant an unrealistic view of what is ââ¬Å"beautifulâ⬠and perpetuate eating disorders,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Young girls, especially between ages 10 to 18 years old often suffer from low-self esteem and therefore are more likely to get caught up in the habit of comparing themselves to others. Children do not possess the logic or reasoning to look at images portrayed in media as ââ¬Å"fabricatedâ⬠and t hat is exactly what they need to be exposed as; fabricated, Photoshopped, false interpretations of reality. Media promotes a never-ending emphasis on physical appearance. Because of this, American culture has produced a standard of female beauty that is unrealistic and unattainable (Derenne, Eugene, and Beresin, 2006). The media tells us that perfection is achievable and they prove it by parading the images of models and actresses on every magazine cover, billboard, beauty product and television commercial. Young girls are constantly bombarded with the message that their personal value is dependent on their physical appearance. Sure, we can raise our children to know that their worth isnââ¬â¢t dependent on arbitrary things such as physical appearance, but what influence can we really have when mediaââ¬â¢s influence is reaching them through computers, magazines, television, and even their cellphones? Mediaââ¬â¢s control in society is undeniable and it is easily seen by itsà ¢â¬â¢ ability to persuade women to buy beauty products, have surgeries, trying rapid weight loss diets, or even starving themselves if it means they will finally meet the

Speech against Animal Testing Free Essays
Now ladies and gentlemen, I would like you guys to have a think about this, without animal research, how long would it take for us to have a breakthrough in order for us to survive through small pox, rabies, malaria or any other severe diseases that had occurred in the past. If it werenââ¬â¢t for animal testing, we wouldnââ¬â¢t be all sitting here, enjoying our lives. Thank you all for listening. We will write a custom essay sample on Speech against Animal Testing or any similar topic only for you Order Now 0 In the case of using primates in animal testing, the National Research and Medical Research Council has stated, ââ¬ËSome biomedical research is best undertaken on primates in order to allow the greatest relevance to understanding health and disease in humans. ââ¬â¢ A PHD student from the University of Sydney, Swetha Murali, is working in a neuropharmacology lab researching about the development of novel therapeutics for treating chronic pain. Murali also raised a number of concerns and argued, ââ¬ËThe first three are not alternatives at all. These animal dealers must be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture and must adhere to Animal Welfare Act standards of care. Both dealers and research facilities can obtain dogs and cats only from specified sources and must comply with detailed record-keeping and waiting-period requirements. In addition, the United States Department of Agriculture conduct surprising inspections of dealers and research facilities for a greement to help ensure research animals are not missing pets. ââ¬â¢ 6 They donââ¬â¢t actually lead to the development of novel treatments, just a better understanding of the efficacy of existing ones. Meanwhile the last two are already commonly used in most labs, but prior to and in conjunction with work and animals. ââ¬â¢ Murali has also stated that ââ¬Ëand as powerful as modern computers are, thereââ¬â¢s still simply no comparison ââ¬â the idea of successfully simulating the complexity present in organism- level biological systems is a pipe dream at present. ââ¬â¢ 9 My third point would be that there is no suitable and reliable substitution to animal testing. It has been reported that there are situations, where there are no viable alternatives to animal testing in order to enlarge the research of treatments to assist human beings from suffering a wide range of diseases. This has been brought up by the National Health and Medical Research Council which stated, ââ¬ËAnimal experimentation remains crucial to a proportion of the funded research design to find better ways of preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and there are many situations where no alternatives exist. 7 The American Association for Laboratory Animal Science stated that, ââ¬ËWhile some research requires that dogs and cats are used, the vast majority of laboratory animals are rodents specifically bred for research. Nearly half of the dogs and cats needed for research are also bred for that purpose. Since state laws and local policies prevent many animal pounds and shelters from providing dogs and cats to research facilities, animal dealers are the primary sourc e for the other half of the animals scientists require. ââ¬â¢ 5 Good morning teachers and fellow classmates. Today I will be presenting my point of view towards the issue of animals being used in testing and research. Animals such as mice, rats and primates are used in the further research for the sake of us human beings, either health or cosmetic wise, and also tested on animals to make sure they have no life-threatening side effects. This act has being carried out for years, and to abolish it now would be a real shame and itââ¬â¢ll bring an end to the further advancement of human health. I assume that most of you guys think that animal testing will involve big needles injecting into those little cute, furry rodents. But I assure you, itââ¬â¢s not. It has been stated that the procedure throughout the whole testing will keep the animalsââ¬â¢ distress to a minimal. Also the people who are involved in this project are all animal lovers, which mean that they arenââ¬â¢t doing this for enjoyment, but for the health of the greater well. As they say ââ¬ËGood science and good animal welfare go hand in handââ¬â¢. In the UK, the experiments that were carried out have been classified as mild, moderate or substantial. In December 2001, licensed experiments that happened in the UK were: 39% mild, 55% moderate, 2% substantial and 4% that are unclassified. Judging from these statistics, it is shown that very few experiments have caused substantial suffering to the animals tested. This also leads to my second point. Many of these animals that were killed in animal testing were specifically bred for this purpose. 3 These animals would not have been alive at all if they werenââ¬â¢t needed for animal testing. Also keep in mind that they were bred under humane conditions, which means, they had the right amount of nutrition to be healthy and also in an environment that were close to home for them. In certain parts of the world, purposely-bred animals were not available, and in these cases, animals that were used must be obtained through licensed and regulated dealers that meet standard criteria where it was suitable laboratory research. 4 How to cite Speech against Animal Testing, Essay examples

Womens Suffrage Movement Essay Example
Womens Suffrage Movement Essay For the past few decades the goal of feminism has been to achieve equal rights for women. It began with the efforts of Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who laid the frame for the Womens Suffrage Movement and later movements to come. They set out to clear the board of patriarchal domination. Since women were not permitted to attend the World Anti-Slavery convention, Mott and Stanton organized the first womens rights convention, Seneca Falls, in 1848 (56). It is this key event, which marks the initial effort toward achieving equal rights for women. Equal status for women was thought to be against the will of God during the nineteenth century. This accounts for the small fraction of women writers recognized during this era. Of this number, a young woman by the name of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson is considered to be the most distinguished. Emily Dickinsons, She Rose to His Requirements, provides a window into the way nineteenth century culture constructed and understood concepts such as gender, marriage and sexual personae. The majority of Dickinsons poetry is based on death, love and eternity. Based on the context of the poem, She Rose to His Requirements, we will examine the cultural attitudes toward gender, marriage and sexual personae, which exist in the nineteenth century. In comparing these attitudes to those, which exist in the twenty-first century we will determine whether or not equal rights for women is truly a reality. One should take into consideration, Betty Friedans term, the feminine mystique. This term is in reference to traditional female roles. In Dickinsons poem, She Rose to His Requirement, the idea of the feminine mystique is present. She rose to his requirement__dropt The playthings of her life To take the honorable work Of woman, and of wife (1-5) Line two of this stanza brings up an aspect of patriarchal domination. The word playthings may refer to the age of the female in the poem and suggests that the female is of adolescence. Line four of this stanza supports this factor in that the poet uses woman versus wife to indicate that the young girl has not yet reached maturity. Another possible interpretation of the use of the word playthings is that the young woman may unwillingly be sacrificing her goals, aspirations, or dreams to play the expected role of a woman of this era. During this period in time it is very common for a female to be married at a very young age, in order to secure her familys wealth or to strengthen her family name. However, this poses a problem: the loss of innocence and identity due to conformity and constraint. Naomi Wolfs, usage of the metaphorical term, Iron Maiden Imagery, supports the existence of this phenomenon (51). Before the term can be understood metaphorically, one must understand its initial meaning. Initially, the Iron Maiden was a term used to describe a type of torture or punishment inflicted upon women of mid-evil times. This torture entailed a women being enclosed in a wooden box, which was internally embedded with metal spikes. As the box was closed, entrapping the female, the metal spikes would puncture the flesh and she would bleed to death. Metaphorically, the Iron Maiden describes the entrapment of a woman in her own body. Perhaps Emily Dickinsons purpose for writing poetry such as this is to escape the constraining roles of women of the nineteenth century. Because outlets for feminine expression are few, this may be a form of passive expression in which Dickinson rebels against patriarchal domination. An example of this passive rebellion arises in stanza two. If ought she missed in her new day, Of amplitude, or awe__ Or first prospective__ or the gold In using, wear away (6-9) Here Dickinson mocks the presence of euphoria on the young girls wedding day. By using the words amplitude, awe, and prospective, the poet applies negative connotation to what is supposed to be the happiest day in a womans life. This may suggest that Dickinson holds a negative view of marriage Many of Emily Dickinsons poems are characterized by the intricate use of metaphors. She uses metaphors more literally than anyone else in major literature (Paglia 637). An example surfaces in stanza three. It lay unmentioned__as the sea Develope pearl and weed, But only to himself__be known The fathoms they abide__ (11-14) In this stanza, it refers to the gold wedding ring in stanza two which, as implied by the poet, will no longer be in use later in the marriage. The sea image used by the poet is appropriate because it is in reference to the word wear (stanza two) which means to cause a ship to turn about with the stern facing the wind. A fathom is a unit of about six feet, which is used to measure the depth of water. By using such words, Dickinson has painted a vivid picture of what the marriage will be like in the future, thus her use of literal metaphors. Because of Dickinsons literal use of metaphors in the poem, we can accurately compare the attitudes toward gender, marriage and sexual personae, which are present in the nineteenth century to those, which are present in the twenty-first century. It appears that in the nineteenth century these attitudes were strongly governed by patriarchal domination. The only purpose women were to serve was that of the wife and child bearer. A woman deemed out spoken was shunned and could never expect to be married if she carried herself in this manner. The irony in the poem arises in the title. The title suggests a step up while the poem itself suggests submissiveness and inferiority. The context of the poem implies that sublimation in women can only occur once she is married. In the twenty-first century, women are bound by beauty, for it has come to exist within society as a commodity, a product, which can be bought and sold. Women are bound by the concept of beauty, for it applies mainly to physical appearance and excludes the beauty of personality and character. Liberal women are often shunned as in the nineteenth century and the idea that men are superior to women has not ceased to exist either. For example, gender discrimination is evident when taking into consideration the stipends of male and female employees who work for the same company, perform the same tasks, and answer to the same boss. The male employee often receives a significantly higher stipend than that of the female employee. Where is the equity in this? The existence of equal rights for women may exist only in spirit, thus it can be referred to as a ghost theory. Equality between genders does not exist. It, along with the concepts of racism and miscegenation, is beyond societys reach. Perhaps the male gender is afraid of what will transpire as a result. Gender equality is feared and remains an unseen aspect of societal development, thus the term ghost theory.

A Cultural History of the Zoot Suit
A Cultural History of the Zoot Suit In the 1944 Tom and Jerry short The Zoot Cat- only the thirteenth cartoon ever made starring that famous duo- Toms would-be girlfriend lays it on him straight:à Boy, are you corny!à You act like a square at the fair, a goon fromà Saskatoon.à You come on like a broken arm.à Youre a sad apple, a long hair, a cornhusker.à In other words, you dont send me! The sad cat goes out and buys himself some new duds from Smiling Sam, the Zoot Suit Man, prompting his wide-eyed gal pal to do a one-eighty.à Youre really a sharp character! A mellow little fellow. Now you collar my jive! Around the same time on the American scene- but, culturally speaking, light-years away- a young Malcom X, then known as Detroit Red, also sang the praises of the Zoot Suit, a killer-diller coat with a drape shape, reet-pleats, and shoulders padded like a lunatics cell. (Apparently, people in the 1940s liked to rhyme more than they do today.) In his widely read autobiography, Malcolm X describes his first Zoot Suit almost in religious terms: Sky-blue pants thirty inches in the knee and angle narrowed down to twelve inches at the bottom, and a long coat that pinched my waist and flared out below my knees... hat angled, knees drawn close together, feet wide apart, both index fingers jabbed toward the floor. (We wont even mention Cesar Chavez, the famous Mexican-American labor activist who wore Zoot Suits as a teen.) What was it about Zoot Suits that united such disparate cultural icons as Malcom X, Cesar Chavez, andà Tom and Jerry? The origins of the Zoot Suit, characterized by its wide lapels, padded shoulders, and baggy pants tapering down to narrow cuffs- and usually accessorized with a feathered hat and a dangling pocket watch- are shrouded in mystery, but the style seems to have coalesced in Harlem nightclubs in the mid-1930s and then worked its way out into the wider urban culture. Essentially, Zoot Suits were the pre-war equivalent of the sagging, low-hipped pants sported by some African-American youths in the 1990s or the huge Afro hairstyles popular in the 1970s. Fashion choices can be a powerful statement, especially if youre denied more mainstream modes of expression because of your race or economic status. Zoot Suits Move Into the Mainstream By the time theyà were referenced by Tom and Jerry, Zoot Suits were well-ensconced in mainstream culture; you can bet that the studio execs at MGM would never have green-lightedà this cartoon if the style were still restricted to Harlem nightclubs. The apostles of Zoot, you might say, were early 1940s jazz musicians like Cab Calloway who played in front of white and black audiences and were emulated in their dress by youths of all races, though not necessarily their elders. (Before and during World War II, jazz was the dominant cultural musical idiom in the U.S., much like hip-hop still is today, albeit in vastly mutated form.) At this point, you may be wondering from whence the zoot in Zoot Suit derives. Most likely, it was yet another token of the vogue for rhyming in wartime America; zoot simply seems to have beenà a jazzy repetition of suit. The young people who donned Zoot Suits as a mild form of rebellion surely enjoyed mystifying their parents with their snappy language and the strange names they assigned to household objects, the same way kids who spend all day texting like to throw out random, impenetrable acronyms. Zoot Suits Get Political: The Zoot Suit Riots In late 1930s Los Angeles, no ethnic group adopted Zoot Suits with more enthusiasm than Mexican-American teenagers, some of them low-level gang members known as pachucos. Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, however, the U.S. government instituted strict wartime rationing of wool and other textiles meaning Zoot Suits, with their wide lapels and copious folds, were technically off-limits. Even still, many Angelenos- not only Mexican-Americans- continued to wear their old Zoot Suits, and obtained new ones from the black market. Around the same time, L.A. was convulsed by the Sleepy Lagoon trial, in which nine Mexican-American pachucos were accused of murdering an innocent civilian (also Mexican). In the summer of 1943, these explosive circumstances detonated when a group of white servicemen stationed in Los Angeles viciously attacked random pachucos (and other ethnic minorities) wearing Zoot Suits in the so-called Zoot Suit Riots. Ostensibly, the aggressors were incensed by the waste of fabric entailed by Zoot Suits, as well as the flaunting of rationing laws by the youths wearing them. The anti-Mexican feeling stirred up by the Sleepy Lagoon trial, combined with the unabashed racism of small-town soldiers stationed in a big city, were more likely explanations. Amusingly, after the smoke had cleared, a California state senator alleged that the riots had been instigated by Nazi spies trying to estrange the U.S. from its Latin American allies! The Afterlife of the Zoot Suit In the U.S., no fashion trend ever goes truly extinct- even if there are no more 1920s flappers sporting bangs and curls or pachucos dressed in Zoot Suits, these fads have been preserved in novels, newsreels, magazines, and are occasionally resurrected as fashion statements (either seriously or ironically). The Cherry Poppin Daddies landed their only Billboard hit in 1997 with the song Zoot Suit Riot, and in 1975, Zoot Suit was a cut from The Whos ambitious rock opera Quadrophenia. In 1979, a play called Zoot Suit- based on the Sleepy Lagoon murder case and the Zoot Suit Riots- lasted for 41 performances on Broadway. Whats more, the outlandish garb sported by inner-city pimps in countless exploitation movies is based on the Zoot Suit. And, of course, you can always watch The Zoot Cat on YouTube, not to mention various electrifying performances by Cab Calloway in full Zoot Suit regalia.

To what extent should we widen the agenda of security studies to Essay
To what extent should we widen the agenda of security studies to include issues like the environment, population migration, food security, and the concerns of women (and other groups) - Essay Example Because of the far reaching consequences of such wars, it became increasingly necessary to select less violent means of settling conflict2. The rise of the Cold war however brought along with it a different set of crimes that defined the way in which this war was fought. The primary area of focus for security studies takes organized violence as its focus. It seeks to explore the various mechanisms by which individuals and aggregations of individuals use to undertake organized violent crime in an area. Once these mechanisms have been identified, security studies goes ahead to identify various ways in which the effects of such levels of violence can be mitigated. Accumulation of knowledge is a fundamental means of protecting oneself from organized violent crime. Knowing when criminals will attack and exactly where they will attack is vital knowledge in light of security issues. This knowledge can relate to the type of weapons that they will use their tactics, their use of humans as soft targets and the exact mechanisms by which they derive their motivation to undertake organized violent crime. Security studies also looks into greater fundamental aspects of organized crime at a national level3. The nature of weapons that a country has at its disposal is essential in determining the level of damage that could be caused by a security threat. The study if security studies would not be complete without evaluating the exact means by which war is caused. War is a delicate subject in the security systems of any country. Previously, it was entered into lightly as witnessed by the occurrence of World War I and World War II. However, with the numerous casualties that were experienced as a result of these wars, it became inhuman to the common man for these wars to be supported. In recent times, security studies has faced increasing pressure to investigate other areas of security that had not been the considered a security concern.
